Clear-Cutting Forests and Woodlands
Clear-cutting involves cutting all the marketable trees in an area and clearing the rest of the trees and underbrush. This is common practice when you purchase raw land to build a house, commercial development, or subdivision. Most landowners choose to clear the site that will eventually become the home site and yard. Once the trees have been cut, you need to remove the stumps and doze the saplings and smaller trees.
Advantages of Clear-Cutting
From an economic standpoint, clear-cutting allows for several advantages. It is a cost-effective harvesting operation that streamlines the timber production process. It creates open spaces where the sun can reach the forest floor, which in turn promotes the growth of younger trees and encourages forest regeneration.
Clear-cut areas also attract wildlife species that prefer open spaces, which fosters biodiversity. And finally, the cleared land is used for your home or other construction project. If the project is a commercial project, it infuses income into the local community.
Clear-Cutting Large Parcels
While we will clear-cut large parcels, keep in mind that once you do that, it is much easier for the soil to erode. Once you have a large area clear-cut, plan to plant additional trees or turn the area into a yard, crop fields or pastures.
You will need to plant something to keep the soil from eroding. While we prefer to clear-cut the area for your construction project and select-cut the rest of the property for proper forest management, it is up to you how you want to manage your woodlands.
Contact Miller Farms for a Property Evaluation
Before we log a property, we always do a free walk-through to see if you have marketable trees. We will provide an estimated start time and discuss buying your trees. The time it takes to complete a job varies based on many factors, including weather, terrain, equipment breakdown (logging is rough on equipment!), the number of trees on your property, and more.
